Burlington Capital recently celebrated the grand opening of Victory II Apartments, a 60-unit community for homeless veterans in downtown Omaha, Neb. The ceremony included General (Retired) John Kelly as a keynote speaker, with veterans helping cut the ribbon.
Located at 819 Dorcas St., the community is less than a mile from Interstate 80 and Omaha Amtrak station, as well as roughly 3 miles from Omaha VA Medical Center. The project was a redevelopment of a college building and houses a mix of studio and one-bedroom apartments and is supported by HUD-VASH housing vouchers. Common-area amenities include laundry facilities, a gym and fitness center, along with restored grounds and landscaping.
Victory II is the third property in Burlington Capital’s housing portfolio intended for veterans. The company previously renovated a portion of a former hospital in Omaha and developed Victory Apartments, a 90-unit HUD Veterans Affairs Supportive Housing (HUD-VASH) property adjacent to Victory II Apartments.
According Burlington Capital CEO Lisa Roskens, more than 40,000 veterans are homeless. Additionally, the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development estimates some 1.4 million other veterans are at risk of homelessness because of risk factors such as poverty, lack of support networks and inadequate living conditions in overcrowded or substandard housing.
Burlington Capital is one of several real estate companies working towards providing housing for veterans. At the beginning of the month, Pennrose and the Town of Dover, N.J., secured financing for a 70-unit, fully affordable community, with half of the units set aside for veterans.
